RESUMO
The main goal of this study is to reproduce the life cycle of nematodes in laboratory. The helminthes were collected from Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus) proventriculus. This beached bird was collected from the Southern Brazilian coast. The eggs of the parasitic nematode Contracaecum pelagicum were incubated in seawater at 21C and hatched after 60 hours. The percentage of eggs that hatched was 96.3% in 24 hours. The larvae L3 emerged from the egg and the total length differed significantly when they hatched and 60 hours that they were maintained alive. Eggs of Contracaecum spiculigerum were obtained from one beached Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus). Free-swimming ensheathed third-stage larvae of C. spiculigerum were shown experimentally to be ingested by the copepods (Acartia tonsa) reared in the laboratory. The larvae L3 have established, grew in the copepods hemocoel, and lost the second-stage cuticle. During the experiment the larvae total length differed significantly between 1 day and 7 days pos-infection. The larvae L3 of C. pelagicum and C. spiculigerum emerged from the egg, which do not agree with the results of other studies that highlighted that the L2 emerge from the egg. Flounders (Paralichthys orbignyanus) reared in the laboratory were inoculated with C. pelagicum larvae solution with seawater, but they were not infected. The results obtained in present the present study shows the necessity of new researches to develop preventive management strategies for aquaculture, which contribute to valorization of aquaculture final product and benefiting the public health.
