RESUMO

The main aim of the following text is to discuss issue of the relationship between local development and the feeling of belonging, taking as its case of study the academic community and old inhabitants of the city of Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, Brazil. One presents a conceptual discussion about the dimensions of development, then about the feeling of belonging. One then traces a relationship between them, trying to assert that only an endogenously conceived development model is able to efficiantly take into account the cultural side of the whole process and then is able to take good profit of the feeling of belonging, when it exists in the community. One presents and discusses the case dealing withe the data from the community of Cruzeiro do Sul, in the province of Acre, Brazil, through an inductive - qualitative method, gathering data through an open questionary, interviews, and bibliographic research. Results pointed to the existence of a strong feeling of belonging within the community. This feeling can be a tool for projects that look forward to help the community of Cruzeiro do Sul to attain meaningful development results.
