RESUMO

The aim of this study was to detect the HPV infection in penile samples of 104 patients attending the Policlínica da região Centro-Sul - Centro de Treinamento em Doenças Sexualmente Transmissíveis (CTDST) of the city of Belo Horizonte by molecular (PCR) and cytopathological methods (Liquid-based Cytology). In addition, 26 cervical samples were obtained from partners of the male patients enrolled in the study. HPV genotyping was also conducted by PCR. The prevalence of HPV detected was 94,23%. HPV-16 was detected in 46,15% of the samples, HPV-18 in 30,77%, HPV-31 in 19,23%, HPV-33 in 4,81%, HPV-45 in 1,92% and HPV-6/11 in 75% of the samples. Infections by more than one viral type were detected in 61% of the patients. High-risk HPVs were detected in 77% of patients presenting genital warts and in 62,8% of the partners of women presenting diagnosis of HPV infection. Concordance of HPV types among couples was only 3,8%. Young age (OR=4,29; IC95%=1,82-10,12; p=0,001) and multiple sexual partners (OR=4,43; IC95%=1,28- 16,28; p=0,01) were significantly associated with HPV multiple infections. HPV infection was detected only in 24% of the samples by liquid-based cytology, indicating that this method is not adequate to detect HPV infection in penile samples. The high prevalence of high-risk and multiple HPV infections observed in young patients with multiple sexual partners indicate the need for educational programs directed to the male population to reduce the HPV transmission and the incidence of cervical cancer.
