RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment needs in schoolchildren aged between 13 and 15 years, from Recife - PE â Brazil. A sample of 600 adolescents randomly selected was obtained from 12 public schools situated in the urban zone. The orthodontic treatment need was measured using the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) and both components (DHC and AC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). According to the DAI, most of the subjects (77%) required orthodontic treatment. A severe malocclusion for which treatment was highly desirable was recorded in 47.5% of the adolescents, and 23.7% had a definite malocclusion for which treatment was elective. Allocated to DHC of IOTN, 57.8% students had great to very great need for treatment, 29.2% had moderate/borderline need and 13% had little to no need. According to the dentistâs evaluation of the AC, 57.4% students had little to no need, 30.5% had moderate need and 12.1% had great need. There were no significant differences in mean DAI and IOTN scores between males and females. The AC scores of students were much lower than those of the dentist trained in the use of IOTN. There was a significant association between AC scores and the self-perception questionnaire. In conclusion, the findings have shown that most of the subjects were in need of orthodontic treatment, when analyzed by the dentist, according to DAI and the DHC of the IOTN, however only 10.2% of the students classified themselves as in need for treatment, emphasizing differences between normative and subjective need for orthodontic treatment
