RESUMO

The empirical orthogonal function and extended empirical orthogonal function techniques have been applied to the meridional wind component to investigate the features of the wavelike easterly disturbances in the Tropical Atlantic for the period January 1, 1980 to December 31, 1989 at 1000 hPa, 850 hPa, 700 hPa e 500 hPa. The patterns show the existence of westward traveling disturbances during all the year with different seasonal features. During DJF the disturbances are more intense in the Southern Hemisphere, being the wavelenght of 6000 Km to 7000 Km and phase velocity of 10 m/s to 14 m/s. During JJA the disturbances are more intense in the Northern Hemisphere, being the wavelenght of 3500 Km to 4000 Km and phase velocity of 10 m/s to 13 m/s. During transition seasons (SON and MAM) these disturbances show signals in the Southern Hemisphere and in the Northern Hemisphere. Among some features of these disturbances, the horizontal inclination is from southeast to northwest during SON and DJF and it is from southwest to northeast during MAM and JJA. The vertical inclination is slightly to east during SON and DJF and it is to east from 1000 hPa to 700 hPa and to west from 700 hPa to 500 hPa during MAM and JJA. The easterly disturbances show their maximum intensity at 850 hPa. Indications that these disturbances can be related to the hurricanes of Northern Hemisphere during JJA and SON, have been found. The trajetory of the traveling disturbances is close to the hurricane trajetory..
