RESUMO

Introduction The hypertensive illness is the most dangerous factor of risk for the development of cardiovascular diseases, reaching about 16,8 million Brazilians, with equal or superior age the 40 years, being considered a problem of public health. Objective The aim of this paper was to compare the effect of a program of aquatic exercises with a similar program of exercises in the ground of twenty sessions on the variation of the arterial pressure of hypertensive individuals of the masculine sex. Materials and method 24 carrying individuals of the masculine sex of systemic arterial hypertension had participated of the study divided randomly in two groups of 12 individuals each. Group 1 (G1) was submitted to a program of aquatic exercises and group 2 (G2) was submitted to a program of exercises in land (control group). Both the groups had carried through 20 sessions of exercises. All the individuals had been submitted to an initial evaluation, the evaluations of the arterial pressure before and after each session of exercise, as well as of the arterial pressure after 10 minutes of ceased the practical one the exercises. The intensity of the exercise was monitored through the gauging of the cardiac frequency (FC), being the same one kept in 60% of the maximum FC, as well as through Escala de Borg for perceived effort. Results The average values of initial, final and 10 minutes of interruption of the exercise systolic blood pressure had after been, respectively, for G1 and G2: 166,75, 169,81, 156,04; 138,48, 132,29, 125,90. The average values of initial, final and 10 minutes of interruption of the exercise diastolic blood pressure had after been, respectively, for G1 and G2: 93,83, 94,69, 89,85; 87,71, 85,10, 81,23. Conclusion As much the aquatic exercises as the exercises in land had been efficient in the reduction of the levels of systolic and diastolic arterial pressure, being that the aquatic exercises had revealed more efficient in reduction of these (p ≤ 0,05), although to be impossible to affirm that this therapeutical one is more efficient of what the exercises in land, a time that the G2 had levels of arterial pressure more controlled than G1.
