RESUMO

The aim of this work is to focus on the effects of meaning produced by formulations about Brazil and Brazilian (and its paraphrases). In this work, which has as its basis the theoretical-methodological principles of Discourse Analysis, we seek to understand the functioning of discourse about Brazil and Brazilians during two different historical moments when these terms were, both, very important: the presidential elections and the FIFA World Cup, both. We also had as our corpus analysis texts published in 2006 in Folha de S. Paulo newspaper and Carta Capital magazine. Based on the analyses, it can be observed that, during the World Cup, the Brazilian elements presence is indispensable in reference to the tournament. Carta Capital seeks a place of resistance to this yellow-andgreen spectacle. Some texts in the magazine produce ironic functionings, but they never neglect the relation established in big media, which is represented in this work by the newspaper. Folha de S. Paulo shows colors known as Brazilian colors – green, yellow, blue and white – in almost all its images. Words as Brazil and Brazilian are used to refer to the Brazilian team and its players. On the contrary, around presidential elections, there are no formulations including Brazil and Brazilian. Colors, words and formulations in general, mention the election process, but the Brazilian electors are not included in it.
