RESUMO

This study presents the discussion about leisure and appropriation of space made from thirtyeight visits to the Ibirapuera Park during 2008. Through the method of qualitative research, I tried to understand the uses of certain areas of this park by individuals (especially in the marquise and the central lane) with special interest on their practice of leisure. This relationship allowed the discussion of concepts such as leisure and free time, smooth space and appropriate space, society acceleration and shortening of the space, "oasis" and "subversion". As how to advance in this research topic, I would suggest the term "space for free time", considering it as a channel that brings freedom to the person
