RESUMO

This studys purpose was to verify the effects of the combination of cognitive stimulation and physical exercises in the active elderly ladies memories by inserting mnemonics techniques and strategies from traditional memory workshops in physical activities lesion. Additionally, to verify if the proposition of stimulating cognition conjugated with physical exercises combined to cognitive stimulation provides additional benefits to memory when compared to cognitive stimulation by itself. Methodology: This study presented an experimental delineation. The sample was constituted by 55 elderly women, whose ages were between 60 and 80 years old, with an average of 68, 4 years old and 5,6 years old of standard deviation. These women live in Federal District of Brazil and were randomly divided in three groups: 1)Traditional Cognitive Stimulation (TCS), composed by 17 elderly women; 2) Cognitive Stimulation and Physical Exercise (CSPE), composed by 19 elderly women; 3) Control Groups (CG), composed by 19 elderly women. These interventions were made during twelve sessions, occurring three times a week. In the TCS group were applied exercises from traditional memory workshops in the CSPE group were applied memory workshop exercises combined to physical exercises; and the control group remained with its normal activities and had no intervention from the researcher. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Scale of Geriatric Depression Resumed Version (GDS-15) and an identification questionary were applied to select the sample. The following tests were used to evaluate the Word List Memory task (WLM), Verbal Fluency (VF), Scale of Memory Complaints (SMC). These evaluations were taken by all of the participants before and after the intervention. Results: It was observed a significant difference between the pre-intervention behavior and the post-intervention one in the TCS and the CSPE groups, to all memory variables evaluated, as no significant difference was noticed in the CG. Yet, it was verified that the post-intervention SMC value was significantly bigger in the CG compared to the TCS and CSPE groups and there was a meaningful time * group interaction in the SMC and VF variables in the TCS and CSPE groups. This last fact indicates a bigger alteration magnitude related to the CG. Conclusion: The cognitive stimulation combined to physical exercises produced similar effects to those observed in traditional memory workshops. The intervention subjected groups (i. e. TCS and CSPE) exhibited better throughput in the WLM and VF tests and a lower score in the SMC when compared to the pre-intervention moment. The CG did not present significant changes between the pre-intervention and the post-intervention tests for any of the studied variables. Although the combination of cognitive stimulation to physical exercises did not present significantly superior scores, it proved to be efficient and valid as an intervention to memory stimulation in groups composed by elderly ladies.
