Estudo clínico-epidemiológico de neoplasias de glândula salivar menor no estado da Bahia. / Intraoral menor salivary gland tumors in a Brazilian population: a retrospective study

Minor salivary gland tumors are relatively rare and comprise a diverse group of neoplasms exhibiting complex morphology. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and epidemiological features of the minor salivary gland tumors diagnosed at Aristides Maltez Hospital, Salvador, Bahia, between 1976 and 2007. Data regarding the age and sex distribution, anatomic location and clinical presentation of the tumors, treatment and recurrence were assessed. Furthermore, the histological diagnoses were reevaluated according to the 2005 WHO classification. Two hundred and seventeen minor salivary gland tumors were identified, consisting of 99 (45.6%) benign and 118 (54.4%) malignant tumors. The mean age for malignant tumors was 54.7 years. For benign tumors the mean age was 44.7 years. The tumors showed a marked predilection for the female; the female-to-ratio ratio was 1.7:1. The palate was most commonly affected site (69.12%). In general, benign tumors presented as an asymptomatic nodule. However, pain and ulceration were frequently associated with malignant lesions. Surgery (81.1%) was the standard treatment. On the other hand, 18.89% patients followed up by adjuvant radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Recurrences were reported in 11 (11.2%) patients with benign tumors and 24(20.4%) patients with malignant tumors. The pleomorphic adenoma (83%) and adenoid cystic carcinoma were the most common benign and malignant tumors, respectively. Our results were compared with several other large series and geographic differences on the frequency and distribution of the minor salivary gland tumors did not were differ significantly to those reported in the literature.
