RESUMO

Titanium alloys have been substituting stainless steel in the aplications as biomaterials, due to their high corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. One deficiency of titanium alloys is their abrasion resistance. In this work the Ti-6A-4V alloy is analysed with and without TiOz deposit that is used as a trial coating in order to improve its abrasion resistance. The stainless steel AISI 304 is used as a comprative material. The corrosion resistance is evalueted using the following electrochemical technics: Potentiodynamic Polarization, Linear Polarization and Tafel Extrapolation. The results show that the titanium ally with and without TiOz is more corrosion resistant than stainless steel AISI 304. In general, Ti-6AI-4V without TiOz deposit presents better corrosion resistance results than the alloy with deposit
