RESUMO

This research had the purpose to analyse the measurements of the anterior and posterior temporomandibular joint spaces considered as normal using the corrected linear tomography technique and the corrected lateral oblique transcranial projections. The research was realised in 50 patients between 18 and 30 years of age. First, the inferosuperior technique was used to obtain the condylar inclinations. Both corrected projections mentioned above were used afterwards. Lines were traced on the radiographs to establish the measurements of the anterior and posterior joint spaces. For this purpose, a digital pachymeter was used. The results showed that tomographic techniques offered higher measurement proportions of both articular spaces when compared with the transcranial technique. In both of the tecniques used, the anterior joint spaces presented higher measurement values than the posterior spaces. We can also observe that posterior condylar positions had a higher trend in the female sex. Finally, it was suggested that as both techniques could be used as auxiliary methodos in the diagnosis of disorder of the temporomandibular joint, it is very important the knowledgement of the principles for its correct interpretation
