RESUMO

The increasing concern with the environment question and the severity of the legislation in discarding industrial and domestic effuents containing metals has motivated the search for new technologies of recovery and removal of metals. The metal removal with biomass of microorganisms has been investigated as an alternative to the traditional methods of metal removal. The brown seaweed Sargassum is available in great amount and distributed in all the coast ofthe South and Southeastem region of Brazil. The ion chromium was selected as object of study due to of its toxicity and great use in many of industry, such as: mining, galvanoplasty and tanneries. Despite copper only presenting toxicity to human health at high concentration, the disposal of this metal in the environment has been subject of concern in function of the increase in the world-wide consumption and the diversity of industrials that use this metal. This work investigated the removal of metals chromium ion, copper ion and their mixture in batch reactors and fixed bed columns using as biossorvent the seaweed Sargassum sp in the temperature of30°C and pH 3.5. The study of the biosorption involved the accomplishment of kinetic tests and the attainment of equilibrium data for one metal and binary mixtures. The equilibrium data was represented by the models of adsorption isotherms of Langmuir and Freundlich, where the parameters of the binary isotherms had been used to determine the affinity of metal ions for biossorvent. The results showed that the ion chromium has greater affinity for the biomass that the ion copper. This work involved the determination of experimental breakthrough curves in a fixed bed column, with volumetric outflow of 6 mL/min, concentration of the solution of feed 1, 2, 3 and 6 meq/L and variable composition of ion chromium and copper. Significant differences in the capacity of removal of copper determined in the experiment of batch reactors and fixed bed column had been detected. Three models had been tested to represent the dynamics of the sorption of the column. The model based on the resistance of mass transfer in sorvent was the one that better represented the dynamics of the individual and the mixture of metal ions biosorption in the fixed bed column
