RESUMO

Trough specific anamnesis, peniscopy and biopsy of lesions and suspected areas, 562 male partners of women diagnosed with human genital papillomavirus were studied. 238 of them (42,3%) had lesions at peniscopy. Koilocitosis was found in 187 (78,5%) patients. The women s male partners who also had their diagnosis confirmed through biopsy predominated among the positive cases. The prevailing locations of the lesions were: the balano-preputial area, the body of the penis and the gland. The aceto-white, flat lesions were the most common and the inflammatory processes were the main differential diagnoses (false-positive peniscopy). The group with lesions was characterized as having the youngest patients with higher prevalence of circumcision, and anterior STD as well as antecedent to homosexual contact. The positivity for extra conjugal relations, serology for syphilis, total number of female partners, previous contact with animals and initial age of sexual activity were identical in the groups with and without lesions. Besides this profile, the following conclusions were reached: peniscopy is only advisable in male partners whose women had their diagnosis histologically confirmed; biopsy is an indispensable procedure complementary to peniscopy, and, while serology for HIV is highly recommendable, serology for syphilis does not seem justified for those patients.
