RESUMO

Silicones are a biomaterial used in the production of implants and applied in several medical fields; it consists of polymers presenting three basic types: liquid, gel and elastomers which differ among themselves in length and degree of polydymethilsiloxane chain reticulation. Its use is controversial since it is related to several organic reactions such as lymphadenopathy and formation of capsular contracture. The objective of this study is to detect histological alterations of the lymphatic axillary and inguinal ganglions suggestive of reaction to gel silicon implants, smooth and texturized elastomers, measuring the ganglions area through a computerized morphometry and common optical microscopy and also to compare local tissular reaction to the same implants by collagen fiber quantification present in the capsule formed around the implants. Sixty-three wistar rats were used and divided into four groups: 15 for gel, 15 for smooth elastomers, 15 for texturized, 15 for control group and 3 for sanitary controI. Silicones were subcutaneously implanted into the dorsum and abdomen of the animaIs and the observation periods were 30, 90 and 180 days. HE coloration was used for the lymphatic ganglions and Sirius Red for the capsule. Statistical analysis applied was the factorial model of the variance analysis. No histological alterations in the lymphatic ganglions of the studied animaIs were found when comparing to that of the control group. AIso, no statistical significant differences were observed in the quantitative analysis of the collagen fibers in the capsules around the gel implant, smooth and texturized elastomers. Statistically significant differences regarding number of collagenous fibers in relation to the observation period were observed and presented in a decreased order of 30, 90 and 180 days; regarding localization, those in the dorsum were greater than those in the abdomen, but this difference was reduced in the observation period and not being significant in the period of 180 days. These conc1usions are not in accordance with some c1inical studies and, though, they are in agreement with others, showing the controversial nature of this subject, favoring new researches aiming the international consensus on the use of silicone compounds.
