RESUMO

The polar tensor method is analyzed and several of its advantages in relation to the usual method are pointed out. The polar tensors permit a new way of calculating the vibrationally pure dipole moment derivatives with respect to the symmetry coordinates. This calculation is described in detail and applied to several molecules. The physical sense and the transferibility of King s effective charge is investigated. Empirical rules that relate the polar tensors and the effective charges for the X2CY rnolecules (X = F, CL and Y = O, S) are derived and found to be valid within the propagated experimental error. Using such rules, an interdependence among the sums of thegas phase infrared intensities of these molecules is found. An exact method for the theoretical calculation of polar tensors and effective charges is proposed and applied to the analysis of the F2CO and PF3 infrared intensities. The usefulness of Crawford s G intensity sum rule expressed in terms of polar tensors is also demonstrated.
