RESUMO

In this thesis, Raman-scattering and dc-magnetization studies on ceramic samples of RxMxMn3+s (R = rare earth; M = Ca, Sr) with Perovskite crystal structure, and X2Mn2O7(X = Tl, In, e Y) with Pyrochlore structure, are described. Some samples belonging to thefirst category present complex magnetic phenomena, among them a coexistence of distinct magnetic phases at a given temperature. Dc-magnetization studies in compounds that show phase separation, due to intrinsic or extrinsic origins, are presented. Raman spectra of manganites which crystallize in the Pyrochlore structure and in each variant of the Perovkite structure are studied, and the characteristic spectra of each structure are mapped, including Raman-activated modes by local or cooperative distortions of the crystal lattice. Structural changes with temperature, present in some of these compounds, are also studied by Raman spectroscopy. A correlation between optical and magnetic properties in manganites is achieved by studying the spin-phonon coupling in these systems, that is responsible for phonon frequency changes near the magnetic ordering temperature. A general formalism for this interaction is presented. Information about the magnetism of manganites are so obtained by Raman spectroscopy. This method can be applied to the investigat ion of new magnet ic materials in general, particularly those which exchange mechanisms are not well understood so far
