RESUMO

This investigation describes the upward vertical annular two-phase flow for application on heavy oil production. One of the main problems concerning the exploitation of this kind of crude is the huge friction pressure gradient involved. The technology that has been studied for the very viscous fluid transportation consists in the continuous injection of little amounts of water in such a way to create a lubrication layer and establish the flow pattern known as core-annular flow or core-flow. The aim of the research was to study the main issues related to heavy oil-water pipe flow, e.g.: flow pattern, hydrodynamic stability, interface shape, holdup and pressure drop. Laboratory experiments have been carried out where the flow patterns were visualized and flow maps generated. Holdup and interfacial properties were also obtained. Besides, pressure drop gradients were measured for upward vertical core-flow. Mathematical modeling has also been developed allowing the physical interpretation of experimental data. A solution has been obtained for the oil-water interface. New transition criteria from core-flow to intermittent flow are suggested and new correlations to predict the holdup and the two-phase pressure drop were developed. Comparisons between experimental data and the theoretical results were made with excellent agreement
