RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine the perceptions of community health workers concerning their technical training in the municipal district of Palmas, in the State of Tocantins (TO). It took the form of a quantitative, exploratory field study. These perceptions were gathered through an adapted, modified questionnaire, which was applied to sixty-three graduates of a Technical Community Health Workers course. This questionnaire consisted of twenty-four questions, arranged in two blocks. The first was designed to find out personal data about the graduates, and the second sought to trace the occupational career of the graduates, before, during and after the technical course. For the closed questions, the data were presented in the form of tables with simple frequency, or cited in absolute numbers and/or percentages. For the open questions, similar responses were grouped, in order to better visualize the data, which were also presented in frequency tables. The data analyzed showed that the graduates of the Escola Técnica de Saúde do Tocantins (TO-ETSUS) entered the labor market in occupations related to the technical area, and that at the beginning of their careers, they were not seen as health workers. Over the years, they were noted for their important social role in the communities. Today, they are professionally recognized as Community Health Agents, and for their important role as a link between the community and the health unit. Thus, the technical training has contributed greatly to professional performance, although this performance has not changed after the completion of the course, and the opportunities for career progression are limited
