RESUMO
The aim of this research is to study the introduction to the geometrical thought by means of sequences of geometrical patterns. Furthermore, we present an approach to pre-algebra in the elementary education and a discussion on the learning of such subject by means of a didactical series consisting of eight activities elaborated from the use of a series of geometrical patterns. We aim to answer the following question: Can a teaching sequence by means of geometrical patterns promote the introduction of the student to the algebraic thought? Our discussion is based on the following hypothesis: ! To engage the student in activities that promotes the relationship among different aspects of the Algebra, such as problem solving, and not only to find the value of an algebraic expression or merely mechanical activities. ! To propose situations through which the students may investigate patterns, in numerical series as much as in geometrical representations, identifying their structures so that the students can describe them symbolically. ! To propose situations that allows the students to construct algebraic notions through the observation of regularities, and not only mechanical manipulations of algebraic expressions. The research is based mainly on the theories about Changing of Pictures of Régine DOUADY (1987) and Registries of Semiotic Representation of Raymond DUVAL (1993). The adopted methodology follows the principles of the didactical engineering. The research evolved teachers and students of the 6th grade of elementary education
