RESUMO

The environment Protected Areas (PA’s) were created with the objectives of (1) “give protection” to the natural areas that are yet not degraded and with rich biodiversity and sight beauty (2) to be preserved as the memory of an environmental past squandered along the humanity history. On this piece of work the conservation of the biodiversity is discussed through the PA’s of INTEGRAL PROTECTION. It is a matter of PA’s that does not allow the existence of residents and the use of the interior of their limits, being the principal aim the preservation of the nature, being admitted only the indirect use of their natural resources. The branch of study chosen was the “Estação Ecológica Juréia/Itatins – SP”, located at Vale do Ribeira, south littoral of São Paulo. It has an area of 79.230ha and covers part of the cities of Peruíbe, Iguape, Itariri and Miracatu. The objective of the research is to analyse the transformation in the occupation of the space on social, productives and culturals relationships, resulting from the transformation of Juréia into an Ecological Station. When we boundary areas for conservation we are creating new frontiers under already existing territories. These new frontiers disrespect the cultural-mythical-symbolic identity links which connects the pre-existing population in these areas. There are two groups: people that already lived there and people that came from outside. Each one of these groups has different symbolical readings and material needs in relation to the territory. The breaking off idea and non-cooperation between groups is installed. We are on the point of inflection: or we hear what the traditional residents of Protected Areas have to say and to teach, or we resign ourselves to watch their disappearance while social group, owner of a very rich culture and accumulated knowledge from many generations, regarding with the natural environment.
