RESUMO
The São José de Macapá Fort was built from 1764 to 1782, on the left margin of the Amazon River, in the nowadays so calied Amapá state. lt was designed by Henrique Antônio Galiucio, during the govemment of the capitão general Fernando da Costa Ataíde Teive, following the instructions received from Marquês de Pombal (Marquis ofPombal). Projected over the natural Amazon scenery and under the Vauban risks, the huge stone building is part of a fundamental monument to the understanding of this north American portion. This work aims to study the fort, not only as a militar structure destined to protect the entrance of the great river but, above ali, as an instrument of Pombal political plans, which tried to engender the portuguese project of protection of the mines found in Vila Bela
