RESUMO

The success of IAIMSs and other information technology plans depends to a great extent on the fit between the planning process and the nature of the organization. Planning processes differ as a function of both plurality of goals and the degree to which technology or the external environment changes. If all members of an organization share a common goal and the organization is in a relatively stable environment, the classic “plan, prototype, implement, evaluate” process may be appropriate. Most health care organizations are not consistent with this model. The components of the organization may have different goals, and both the health care environment and roles for technology are changing rapidly. In these circumstances, planning takes on a different light. This paper outlines approaches to IAIMS planning in various environments and provides a framework for IAIMS planning in rapidly changing environments.
