RESUMO

This work investigates texts produced by boys and girls of a rural community, seeking to identify marks of gender. Teachers in the community received copies of the texts, in a standardized format, and were asked to identify whether the texts were written by a boy or a girl, indicating linguistic aspects which might be characteristic of masculinity or femininity. Their empirical perceptions were then investigated by means of an analysis of some of the structures present in the texts, namely the use of adjectives, modality and transitivity. The general theoretical framework was Norman Faircloughs principles of Critical Discourse Analysis. The results indicate that, although the readers perceptions were not for the most part supported by the textual data, nevertheless some of the differences detected between texts produced by boys and by girls might be attributed to gender identity.
