RESUMO

The water that percolates through acid sulfate rock masses can become chemically aggressive to concrete, thereby compromising some of its characteristics, such as watertightness and strength. The presence of acid sulfates in the rock mass at the installation site of the Irapé Hydroelectric Power Plant led to the study and implementation of protective measures for the concrete structures. The studies were conducted based on the British BRE Special Digest 1 Standard, which proposes a classification of the chemical attacks by acid rock mass and defines which characteristics the concrete should have to resist these attacks, in addition to determining additional protective measures to be adopted. At Irapé, along with the adoption of measures related to the composition of the concrete, the rock surfaces were waterproofed to avoid contact of the water percolating through the rock mass with the concrete surfaces. After conducting field and laboratory tests, two waterproofing products were defined: Fospox SF P235, a rigid epoxy-based membrane, and Nitoproof 250, a flexible polyurethane membrane. This work consists of a description of the studies and tests that led to the choice of these products, as well as the criteria for defining the treated locations and the procedures and controls used in the application of the waterproofing membranes. An evaluation was also made of the efficiency of the applied treatment by means of laboratory analysis of concrete and rock coring taken from representative locations of the structures foundations two years after casting the concrete and one month after the reservoir creation. Based on the results of the tests, the work concludes that the waterproofing solution for the rock surfaces, together with improvements in the characteristics of the concrete, was efficient, at that particular time, for the protection of the concrete surfaces built on the acid sulfate rock mass at the Irapé Hydroelectric Power Plant.
