RESUMO

The aim of this investigation was to assess the clinical relevance of sialometric, halitometric and tongue coating presence exams as diagnosis tests for halitosis and periodontal disease. A hundred and twenty individuals were selected, from both genders with ages varying from 18 to 66 years (range = 37 years), and with the following characteristics: 20 individuals with halitosis and gingivitis, 20 individuals with halitosis and chronic periodontitis, 20 individuals with chronic periodontitis without halitosis, 20 individuals with gingivitis without halitosis, 20 individuals with halitosis without periodontal disease and 20 healthy individuals. Smokers, individuals with systematic disease, with pseudo-halitosis, edentulous and individuals under xerogenic medication and antibiotic were excluded. The sample was submitted to a standardized evaluation protocol: halitometry, resting and stimulated sialometry, anamnesis, assessment of tongue coating and periodontal assessment by circumferential probing of 6 sites in all teeth. The statistical analysis through multivariate logistic regressions showed that age (p=0,0004), tongue coating presence (p=0,0211) and resting saliva flow rate (p=0,0087) are indicator factors for the increase of severity of periodontal disease (periodontal indices). Univariate logistic regressions demonstrated that tongue coating is a indicator factor for the oraganoleptic test scores increment (p=0,0001). It could be conclude that the inclusion of sialometric, halitometric and organoleptic tests and tongue coating presence assessment are of clinical relevance to halitosis and periodontal diseases diagnosis.
