RESUMO

Objective. To assess the importance of anthropometric indicators for the occurrence of hypertension in the elderly in Sao Paulo. Methods. This is a cross-sectional, household-based population study, part of a multicenter study (SABE Survey), coordinated by the Pan American Health Organization, that examined 2143 individuals (. 60 years old), between 2000 and 2001. The occurrence of hypertension was evaluated by the following question: gHas a doctor or nurse ever told you that you have high blood pressure? hThe anthropometric indicators used were: body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist / hip ratio (WHR) and waist height ratio (WHR). We used logistic regression analysis of binary, stratified by sex. Results. The higher prevalence of hypertension are founded in women (56.6% vs. 49.5%), as well as diabetes and obesity, according to BMI, WC and WHR. We have found higher rates of smoking and physical activity in males. In the final model for men, BMI was the indicator that most strongly linked to hypertension. For women, all indicators were associated very similar to the outcome. Conclusions. There were differences in diagnostic ability of the different indicators of obesity. The association between anthropometric indices and hypertension is different between men and women.
