RESUMO
The growth of rhizobia under 1% O2 induced the accumulation of α,α-trehalose, and the effect of low O2 was independent of medium composition and Rhizobium species. Trehalose concentration in cells declined rapidly when microaerobic cultures were supplied with 21% O2. Trehalose formation in nodules may be induced by the microaerobic environment.
