RESUMO

This work was carried out at the Setor of Ovinocultura of the Departamento de Zootecnia â UFLA to evaluate the effect of different levels of total and forage NDF (fNDF) in the diet offered to ovine on the intake and apparent digestibility of the diet and on the feeding behavior. A feeding behavior study and an in vivo digestibility assay were done to determine the intake and the apparent digestibility coefficient of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), crude energy (CE), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and the nitrogen balance. Sixteen adults, not pregnant, not lactating, Santa InÃs ewes weighting 45,01 Â 5,15 kg were used. The experimental design used was a 4x4 latin square, with four treatments (29,64; 35,77; 37,38 and 43,31% of total NDF) and four periods. The diets were composed by corn, soy bean meal, mineral premix and coastcross hay. The intake of DM, OM, CE, digestible energy, metabolizable energy, CP, digestible protein, NDF, digestible NDF, ADF and digestible ADF were influenced by treatments. The apparent digestibility of DM, OM, CE and ADF were influenced by treatments. The nitrogen balances were positive at all levels of total and forage NDF, and, as the rumination time, were influenced by treatments. This study made it clear that exists a physiological limit to use concentrate in the diets offered to ovine, being necessary a minimum amount of total and forage NDF in the diet to reach the maximum efficiency of use of the nutrients.
