RESUMO

In this work, the process of drying pellets was investigated using a statistical methodology. The factors studied were pressure, temperature, production and green pellet size. An experiment project was designed to determine the interactions between the factors and optimize the drying process. The experiment was divided in two stages: up draft drying and down draft drying. The up draft was divided in two blocks. In the first pellets as different sizes were used. After up draft drying optimization, the best test condition was chosen and down draft drying was investigated. The stage of down draft drying was evaluated with only pellets of same size. The factors pressure, temperature, production and green pellets size caused a significant effect in both up draft drying and down draft drying processes. Some variables of drying process, as permeability of the streambed and ideal moisture, which had not been considered as parameters in this study, had influenced in the final results of the experiment. Pressure has a significant influence in the moisture decrease in the process of up draught drying with homogeneous and heterogeneous pellets. However, it has a negative effect causing a decrease of green and fired pellets compression strength. Production has a significant influence in moisture decrease in the three layers of green pellets in the process of down draught drying with heterogeneous pellets.
