RESUMO

Soot formation in industrial combustion systems constitutes an important theme of engineering interest. The presence of soot in the flame increases the heat transfer from the combustion gases by thermal radiation, but may constitute an environmental problem when emitted in the atmosphere. This work evaluates the influence ofthe oxygen index and air velocity in soot formation and in the temperature of acetylene diffusion flames, produced in a burner with paralle1 anullar coaxial oxidizer flow. The rnethodology used for calculation of the soot concentration was the non intrusive technique based on laser light extinction. In this work the enrichment level was varied as well as air velocity, to verify the influence of both factors in soot formation. The results suggest that the cornbined use of both the oxygen content and air velocity can provide a control toei for soot formation, which level can be increased or decreased. The results concern a oxygen index in the air smaller than thirty percent, which does not require significant existing equipment changes
