RESUMO

With the advent of Computer Networks and their popularization, principally in 80 and 90âs decades, the traditional, secure and reliable centralized architecture, represented by mainframes, was rapidily substituted by a descentralized architecture haracterized by tring to resolve old problems already resolved by the old architeture and facing new problems, demanded after 90âs decade, to offer Next Generation services, i.e. services which treat audio, video and text medias. Comparatively to the wide, complex and heterogeneous Internet environment, an Intranet is a better place to offer Next Generation Services because of the previsible variables like equipments and technologies involved to guarantee necessary requirements of newer services. The principal contribution of this thesis is the project and implementation of a transcoding infrastructure and an aplication prototype to distribute audio in an Intranet with adaptability to network computerâs state. Only audio media is treated but in future works, other medias can be treated, like video, to develop not only media distribution but audio/video conferences applications too. The application and Transport RTP - Real Time Transport Protocol, implemented in various audio formats in JMF - Java Media Framework is used to improve adaptable mechanism. Network necessities, like Multicast and priorization queues in layers 2 and 3 of OSI reference model (e.g, IEEE 802.1P and DiffServ), are explained. Four basics Use Cases are identifieds: Transmit to the Transcodifier; Start up of audio sessions in the Transcodifier; Receive Audio Streams in the Receptor; and Change Reception Multicast Session. First three of then are specified, implemented and validated. The other, is only specified and its implementation and validation in scenery with various queues of packet priority in the net layer are a future work. This Master thesis exploits the concept of transcodification to treat in a good way the problem of heterogeneous network resources in an Intranet
