RESUMO
Hypocretin system has been described as one of the more important neurotransmission system to be involved in the waking process. Lack of function of this system, by mutations or neuron death, leads to pronounced excessive sleepiness in mammals. It is proposed that a hyperactive hypocretin system can result in hyper arousal episodes and insomnia. The hypocretins 1 and 2 bind to two known receptors widely distributed in the brain. In the present we sought to analyze whether polymorphisms in both receptors 1 and 2 are associated with insomnia. We have enrolled 83 insomnia patients, confirmed the complain with polysomnographic recordings and compared the frequencies of the hypocretins receptors polymorphisms with healthy controls with no sleep disorder confirmed by two nights of sleep recording. Our results show no association of any of the polymorphisms in both receptors with insomnia.
