RESUMO

This dissertation seeks to analyze and probe into the lived experiences of rural workers in Quilombo, Santa Catarina, who, through cooperative agriculture, are trying to keep small-scale farming viable. The research examined the experience lived and interpreted by these workers revealing how they arrived at the idea of association. The study used oral interviews with rural workers, written sources, and historiographies about the settlement of western Santa Catarina. The analysis of sources was based on theoretical-methodological contributions of authors who think of culture as ways of living. Also, the analysis incorporates reflections on memory, conceived as a social reconstruction of lived experiences of the past, having as a reference the present. In relation to memory, the research observed the different ways to analyze temporalities. We highlighted the time trajectory and establishment of the farmers in the region with their ways of living and of cultivating the land; the time of the arrival of agricultural modernization and the transformations in ways of organizing labor; and the time period of building cooperative agricultural groups who practice and advance the ideas of farming associations.
