RESUMO

The objectives of the present study were: to compare the critical speed (CS) determined from the combination of different distances with the anaerobic threshold (A T), determined through the fixed value of 4 mM of lactate, b) to compare CS, determined from the distances of 100, 200 and 400 m with the A T and the maximal speed maintained par 30 minutes (S30), c) to analyze the capacity of CS and AT to predict performance of 400 m, and, d) to verify the influence of age (chronological and biological) and gender in the values and relations between these variables. Participated of this study 95 swimmers of both genders, with ages between 10 and 15 years, divided in eight groups, according to chronological age, biological age, and gender: 10-12 years - G10-12M (N = 24) and G10 12F (N = 19), and 13-15 years - G13-15M (N = 24) and G13-15F (N = 28), P1-P3 - G1M (N = 10) and G1 F (N = 9), and P4-P6 - G2M (N = 30) and G2F (N = 36). The swimmers performed the following tests: 1) 2 submaximal trials of 200 m for determination of A T, 2) maximal performances of 25,50, 100,200 and 400 m for determination of CS, where CS1 (25/50/100 m), CS2 (50/1001200 m) and CS3 were determined (100/200/400 m), and 3) 2 to 5 submaximal trials with maximal duration of 30 minutes for determination of S30. Considering chronological age, the CS1 was higher than ali variables in ali groups. Only CS1 was lower in the youngest girls, however in the youngest boys ali variables presented lower values than the oldest. The girls of 13-15 years presented lower values than boys in ali variables. The CS3 (0.97:t 0.10 and 1.10:t 0.13 m/s), AT (0.97:t 0.10 and 1.07:t 0.11 m/s) and S30 (0.99:t 0.09 and 1.11 :t 0.13 mIs) were equal in boys and in girls the S30 (0.96 :t 0.08 and 0.91 :t 0.05 m/s) was lower than AT (1.04 :t 0.07 and 0.96 :t 0.06 m/s). There was an age effect in these variables in boys and girls, and of gender only in the 13 -15 years swimmers. The values of lactate obtained in 1 Q2 min and at the end of test were higher in boys than girls. In relation to biological age the results were similar. Therefore, in swimmers of 10 to 15 years, independent of the age and gender, the determination of CS and its validity for the prediction of A T is dependent of distance used. The CS can be used in the determination of A T and these two variables are capable to predict the performance in the 400 meters. For girls the A T represents a higher intensity than that can be supported by a long period of time
