RESUMO

Mello, Adriana Marotti de - Innovative Capacity Maintenance by Automakers in a Product Development Outsourcing Scenario – The case of Brazilian Automotive Industry. 2006. Dissertation (Master) – Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo, 2006. In order to diversify product portfolio and reduce development costs and timing, firm tend to outsource New Product Development (NPD) to suppliers. This could affect innovative capacity of the firm that outsources NPD in two different ways: there could be significant technological contribution from the supplier’s technical expertise, or, in the long range, could mean dependence and hollowing out its own knowledge base. But how could firms enjoy benefits of NPD outsourcing without hollowing out their knowledge base? This study attempts to discuss this question, analysing which variables would have significant impact on the maintenance of firm Innovative Capacity, with the outsourcing of NPD activities. Through bibliographic review and empiric research it was possible to conclude that Innovative Capacity Maintenance when NPD is outsourced, could be affected by factors such as maintenance of control over product Architectural Knowledge, Historical Path of the Firm, Supply Chain power structure and Product Strategy. A multiple cases study was conducted about the development of a new vehicle in Brazil. This case was compared to other projects developed by the same firm with different outsourcing strategies. The cockpit and seats modules were studied as our cases and data was gathered based on interviews with Development and Procurement Executives in automakers and their suppliers. The strategy applied for supplier involvement in development and the relationship between automakers and suppliers were studied in detail. The main conclusion of this work suggests that Brazilian automakers are, so far, with the current automotive industry and product architecture structure, being able to maintain their Innovative Capacity even with their initiatives of outsourcing NPD activities and also showed the contribution of each one of the variables listed above.
