RESUMO

This thesis had the purpose of reaching a complementary k.nowledge of the intricate inter-relations between the complex phenomena of mass, momentum and energy transfers, which develop in furnaces with vortex flows, by mathematical modelling and computational simulation, in two and three-dimensional approaches. Furthermore, the effects of the bumer design and of the various mathematical models, such as the turbulence models and the combustion models on the characteristics of the simulated flows, were analysed. The cylindrical fumace is formed by a combustion chamber and a burner, heated by the direct contact with a flame jet. The bumer is positioned in the centre of the circular wall in the edge of the fumace chamber. It is composed by two incommunicable paths where the reactants are injected into the chamber; the combustion air enters tangentially by the annular area and the fuel by its internal duct. The computational fluid-dynamics code CFX - 4.2 version, was used to obtain the solution of the transport equations, which employs the Finite Volume method with nonstaggered variables solving the system in general curvilinear co-ordinates. The grids was constructed by the multi-block technique. Thus, the principal characteristics of these furnaces were reproduced in this computational investigation
