RESUMO

This investigation describes a semi-analytical model which simulates fracture propagation in petroleum reservoir rocks. The model permits evaluating the three fracture dimensions parameters (width, height and length) during propagation. Like other pseudo 3D models, some assumptions are used to solve the fracture three-dimensional propagation problem, such as one-dimensional fluid flow in the crack, symmetrical confining stress contrasts and no contrasts in Young s moduli and Poisson s ratio. The governing equations of the model are: England &Green equation, which is used to determine the width-opening pressure relationship; fluid flow equation , to describe the pressure distribution in the crack; Rice s equation, to describe a relationship between crack height and propagation pressure and the mass continuity equation, which describes the leak-off-flow at the crack surface. The fracture propagation criteria is based on the concept of critical stress intensity factor (or fracture toughness). Numerical simulations were made and compared with existing simulators results and good agreements were found. Some laboratory results are shown. A fracture closure analysis based on the pressure decline is described; it is an important tool to verify the success of a hydraulic fracturing simulator
