RESUMO
The odontoid fractures increase its frequency from adult age; being the most frequent fracture of the backbone beyond 80 years of age. Its modern treatment requires detailed knowledge of the spine anatomy for getting an adequate fixation, and the necessary lesser post-operative immobilization; reducing morbidity and mortality. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the anatomical measurements using direct measurement of the odontoid process, and its relationship with the C2 spine bone in adult corpses. Sixty-four C2 spine bones from adult corpses were analyzed. This collection belongs to the archived materials from the Anatomy Department â Health Sciences Center â Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil, from October 2006 to February 2007. Thirty-two C2 spine bones were from male gender and 32 from females. The spine bones were directly measured using precise pachymetry for the odontoid heights and its relationship with the C2 spine body, the coronal, sagittalis major and minor diameters, and its angle in relation with C2 body; using X ray. The measurements of the odontoid processes are diverse. The mean height for the females is 14.16 Â 1.10mm, and for the males is 15.21 Â 1.15mm. The minor transverse diameter is 8.81 Â 0.47mm for the females and 9.38 Â 0.84mm for the males. The inclination angle varied from 0 to 260 for the posterior direction for both groups. Two morphological distinct groups of odontoid were observed. They were classified as follows: pediculated (narrow base and broad body); and flat (broad base and narrow body). One can conclude that the morphometry, morphology, and the angle of axis processes are diverse: the mean height this spine bones is lower than 15mm; the sagital diameter of the odontoid process is smaller than the anterior-posterior; the means of the circumferences of the odontoid body are significant greater than those from the base; both in the pediculated and the flat ones. The odontoid fixation requires previous computed tomography planning
