RESUMO

The topic of study of this thesis is the gaucho tradition, specifically one of its cultural artifacts, which are the bombacha trousers. The following questions served as the orienting theme of the research: 1) What meanings can I attribute to the narratives about gaucho tradition?; 2) How are the practices of making bombachas constituted?; 3) How does mathematical knowledge operate in the constitution of such practices? In order to discuss these questions, contemporary theorizations on curriculum were considered and the contributions of the area of Ethnomathematics were examined from a perspective aligned with postmodern thought. The empirical part of the research was carried out through ethnographic procedures: seven people who make bombachas were observed and interviewed and a field log was used. This thesis is organized into five chapters. The first chapter is a general presentation of the work. The second explains the theoretical point from which the study took place and how the object of study was constructed. In the third chapter details are given as to methodological procedures as is a description of the people who participated in the study. In the fourth chapter, narratives which institute the gaucho tradition were examined, in particular the ways in which the bombacha as a cultural artifact is given meaning. In order to undertake such analysis, documents and books on the topic were gathered. The result of this analysis is expressed in five units: 1) tradition as a continuation of the past; 2) the Farroupilha Revolution as a symbol of gaucho bravery and courage; 3) The Center for Gaucho Traditions (CTG) as the place where one learns how to be gaucho; 4) the CTG as a dominion linked with rural life; 5) the Gaucho traditionalist movement as a regulating institution of tradition. The fifth chapter focuses on the presentation and analysis of practices used by this studys participants in the making of bombachas, pointing out similarities and differences in the ways of cutting, sewing and embroidering the combs of the bombachas. Practices from outside the gaucho tradition that incorporate elements of this tradition were also mentioned. The final chapter of this thesis analyzes how mathematical knowledge operated in the constitution of the practices for making the bombachas studied. In the attempt to escape a perspective which is limited to merely stating the mathematical contents present in said practices, there was an attempt to understand how mathematics function within them
