RESUMO

The present research - which is based on a qualitative, interpretative and microethnographic analysis - aimed at investigating the teaching approach adopted by the two teachers who were the participants of this work. Special attention was given to the coherence existing between their speech (what they say they adopt as their approach) and their doing (what they really do when teaching). The data were collected through observations and recordings of classes, questionnaires, and an interview. The results highlight some implications of the study which may motivate further research in the area of the teachers teaching culture, mainly focusing on the importance of the Communicative Approach and its principles. The theoretical grounds were provided by Almeida Filhos approach analysis (1993,1999,2005) which is entitled Teaching Approach Analysis of Foreign Language Teachers. The results showed that there is a certain coherence between the speech and the doing of these two teachers who participated in the present research. By confronting the principles which we defined as crucial within the Communicative Approach and the data collected by us, we came to the conclusion that their practice (or doing) demonstrates some coherence. Thus, our aim of revalidating the principles of the Communicative Approach has been achieved. Based on this conclusion, we propose the creation of partnerships among those institutions which have been successful in implementing such approach and those which would like to obtain the same success. These partnerships would have as their biggest aim the following two components: the spread of knowledge in relation to the principles of the Communicative Approach and the real expansion of their practice by our foreign language teachers.
