RESUMO
This piece of work is the result of the acquired experience of teaching the Italian language to adults, more precisely, my experience teaching Italian to the elderly. This dissertation deals with the result from a study accomplished with these students and the several situations experienced by them in the classroom. During my lessons I could notice that these elderly students present particular traits and needs which I had never noted in other groups made up of teenagers and young adults. Having this evidence in mind, in case I really wanted to succeed in obtaining satisfactory results and a good relationship with my elderly students, I was in urgent need of reorganizing, perfecting and restructuring my pedagogical practice. For this reason, I started reading publications about Gerontology, Applied Linguistics and about the Practice of teaching and learning foreign languages. The chapters of this dissertation consist of a presentation of this elderly age group, their motivations, traits, previsions for the next decades, as well as a profile of the people with whom I have worked, and also the activities which resulted in positive responses and had a warm acceptance among these elderly students.
