RESUMO

The present study includes a taxonomic revision of the genus Desmodium Desv. In Brazil as well as a treatment of morpho geographic aspects of the genus. Material from the principal herbaria in Brazil was examined and, for some species, field populations were also examined. The taxonomic studies resulted in revized species descriptions, the preparation of geographic distribution maps and the construction of analytic keys the species. In the present treatment 31 species are considered valid and distinct among 40 species studied in Brazil. In addition to these, two new species were described (D. craspediferum and D. hatschbachii) and three others were added to the list of species of this genus which occur in Brazil (D. hassleri (Schindl) Burk., D. hickenianum Burk. and D. multicaule DC.). These species are distributed among five sections: Sagotia Benth., Nicolsonia Benth., Heteroloma Benth., Chalarium DC. And Pleurolobium DC., with this last section probably being an introduction. Chalarium is the largest section with two subsections: Unifoliolata DC (7 spp.) and Trifoliolata DC. (14 spp.), followed by Heteroloma (11 spp), Nicolsonia (2 spp.), Sagotia (1 spp.) and Pleurolobium (1 spp.). The majority of the species of Desmodium in Brazil occur in the Central-southern region, specially in the states of Minas Gerais, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul e Mato Grosso do Sul. ...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
