RESUMO

The aim of this work is to understand Folha de Pernambuco police covering, comparing the news about the "Serrambi Case", which was a crime performed against two middle-class female teenagers, with other police related news involving popular classes people published in the same period. More precisely, this study intends to investigate the possibility of a differential treatment in the police news involving victims from different social classes. In order to do so, reports published in the referred newspaper in the period from May, 2003 to December, 2004 were used. In the analysis, police related news presented in the section named Grande Recife (about the âSerrambi Case") and in the Police insert (about Recifeâs Metropolitan Area outlying neighborhoods population) were compared. This workâs theoretical foundation is based on Symbolic Power concepts (Bordieu, 2004) and Ethos (Maingueneau, 2001). Analysis showed that both Symbolic Power and police related newsâs Ethos in Folha de Pernambuco are influenced by the diverse approached social classes
