RESUMO

As a health science, dentistry suffered influences from the modern paradigm in the last three centuries. The positivist conception of science knowledge, though anachronous, still seems hegemonic in pedagogic mediation for the dentistry teacher, where objectivity, specialization, quantification and knowledge reproduction are a standard. This becomes a hindrance to develop a critical and reflective mindset of the future dental surgeons. This is a core value to a more humanized and professionalized service to the community in the days that we are living, and this reaches our educational system as well. The purpose of this research is to critically analyze the reality of the dentistry teacher and what are his or her competencies and pedagogical practices, assess the eventual changes on old fashioned teachinglearning methods and point out alternatives for a paradigm shift in knowledge that society demands. Ten dentistry teachers out of four universities in Curitiba, Parana, were interviewed and after the evaluation and reflection on the themes, we concluded that it is clear that these teachers face difficulties to bring forth new dental surgeons in a critical, ethical and non selfish way that matches the New National Guidelines for Dentistry Course. The equipping of the dentistry teacher, academically speaking, happens basically through specialization courses, MD and PHD, but these still value the technical procedures that take place in this profession, whereas the academic and pedagogical themes are left aside. Therefore this category of teachers still did not notice what kind of realm they are exposed to. To overcome this scenario these teachers must undergo a special enabling program that may change their infrastructure. Brainstorming and learning about ones activity, the dentistry teacher can sum to his technical approach, a humanized and ethical vision, hence becoming capable to transform his or her role before the individual and the world.
