RESUMO

Soil is the basis for food production and sustainability of a society. Conservation of this resource depends on all humanity. However, man s inability to recognize the limits of nature leads to an inappropriate relationship with the soil, expressed by the erosion and degradation, which reduce its productive potential. The process of erosion, however, not only causes physical, chemical and biological losses, it also generates economic losses, with negative effects both inside (on-site) and outside (off-site) of the plant, imposing a cost to the entire society. So, the objective of this study was to present, through an extensive literature review, the cost estimates generated by the process of erosion. In addition, a model was proposed for evaluation this costs. The revised estimates, in turn, indicate the amount of resources spent on the process of degradation, creating a common sense about the need for its conservation. In the United States of America the costs of soil erosion were estimated at 44 billion dollars a year, in the European Union at 32 billion euros a year and the Brazil at 30 milion dollars a year. The analysis of these costs show, above all, that conservation measures must be taken to the development of a sustainable production system.
