RESUMO

An r-method (nodal relocation method) to optimize finite element meshes in linear elasticity problems is presented in this work. The r-method consists in obtaining an adjusted position of the mesh nodes, in order to find better results related to the discretization errors. The method is viewed here as a resolution scheme of an optimization problem, where the objective function is the total potential energy of the discretized structure. Equality and inequality constraints are present, and the optimization main variables are the nodal coordinates, because the optimization process is carried out iteratively in two steps: minimization related to the nodal displacements (standard finite ele¬ment solution) and optimization related to the nodal coordinates. This optimization procedure is done by using the Augmented Lagrangian Method in two distincts ways. One in which the minimization with respect to the nodal displacements (resolution of equilibrium equations) is performed every time that the objective function is cal¬culated, and the other in which the minimization with respect to the displacements is done once in a Lagrangian Augmented iteration. Numerical results and examples are commented.
