RESUMO

The professional training of the Physical therapist, since its regulation, has undergone various innovations aimed at sustaining the social, scientific and cultural life of the profession. The need and importance are understood, nowadays, of a training for health professionals that is focused on the consolidation of the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS the Brazilian national healthcare system). Integrality is a fundamental principle of the SUS, in assuring for its users a healthcare that includes the actions of promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, with guaranteed access to all levels of complexity of the Health System. Integrality was therefore chosen as the basis of this study, in the belief that this is the richest of the essences of SUS, capable of taking in all other premises. The proposed objective of this study is to analyze perceptions of university teachers of Physiotherapy in the south and mid-west of Santa Catarina, on the issue of Integrality in Basic Healthcare. The methodological approach used by the research is the qualitative one, which began with a documentary analysis of the curricular matrices of universities in the south and mid-west of Santa Catarina, which had graduate courses in Physiotherapy. Based on this analysis, the teachers responsible for the disciplines related to the theme of this study were identified. This was followed up with data collection, through semi-open interviews, with the use of a guiding script. The results of the interviews were analyzed and discussed in the form of categories. Among the findings are the concepts held by teachers, on the unified Brazilian health system, its history, its progress in consolidation, its achievements, and some perceptions about how SUS works, its failures, the resources to minimize these failures, and those whom the SUS is aimed at. The discourse analysis also gathered the teachers understandings of Basic Healthcare, health promotion and the meanings of Integrality. The results addressed the teachers views regarding the participation of the Physical therapist in the SUS and Basic Healthcare, and the need for physiotherapy be included in the policies of SUS and be present at all levels of primary healthcare; and the ways in which the Physical therapist can help with their general training, knowledge and skills. Finally, it determines what is lacking for the Physical therapist to form part of the basic healthcare; what is lacking for this professional to work with SUS and with integral healthcare for families and communities, and the explanations given by the teachers for why the participation of Physical therapist is still low in this scenario. The study provided an understanding that Physical therapists need to be more aware of their professional skills, and to seek public and professional recognition. They need to be more committed to the profession and to the SUS, to get to know the system better, and to act in a way that will contribute to health, believing in Physiotherapy and in the SUS
