RESUMO

The purpose of the present study was to analyse the neuromuscular function of the stomatognathic system in subjects with cleft lip and palate and marked occlusal dysfunction. Electromyographic activity was recorded by a two channel-eletromyograph (DISA 1500 EMG- System). The duration of the EMG silent period, elicited by chin tapping as well as by voluntary rhythmic percussion of the teeth, the masticatory act duration and the masticatory cicle duration were determined at the masseter and temporal muscles. The statistical analysis showed that the EMG silent period duration elicited by chin tapping was significantly greater in the cleft subjects than in the normal subjects. The same was observed for the silent period duration elicited by voluntary rhythmic percurssion of the teeth on the masseter muscles. Concerning the temporal muscles EMG silent period duration was also greater in the cleft subjects than in the normal subjects; however, the differences was not statistically significant. The masticatory act duration was significant1y greater in the cleft subjects; only for the right side muscles. The masticatory cycle duration did not differ between the two groups. These observations showed that the period of the muscular relaxation was reduced in the cleft group. The results suggest that the EMG silent period duration elicited by chin tapping is the best parameter for the evaluation of the functional state of the neuromuscular stomatognathic system
