RESUMO

The development of trade policy adopted by a country has different kinds of impacts in many sectors of the economy. The consequences could be positive or negative, depending on the reaction of each sector, and could change the level of local production, employment and productivity of the economy. In order, to increase the international commerce, the countries are taking part in negotiations, such as economics blocs or multilateral agreements, focused in reducing or eliminating the trade barriers among them. The Brazilâs participation in WTO and MERCOSUL is an example of this scenario. The participation could bring significant influences in many sectors of Brazilian economy as happened after Brazilâs Tariff Reform in the 90Âs. The objective of this project is to analyze the impacts of the trade policy adopted by Brazil aiming to reduce import tariffs. This way, a simulation of a tariff reduction was made using the automotive and textile sector as example. The tariff reduction proposal was based on a Swiss Formula proposed by the WTO to developing countries. As a result, the tariffs found were lower than the Brazilian average bringing negative consequences for the sector. In an effort, to measure the variation of the import amount after a tariff reduction, this project used the elasticity concept. The outcome showed that more elastic products increased more their imported amount than the other ones. Therefore, the importance of trade policy consequence for different sector of the economy was presented by this analysis
